Worked example — Cups to grams converter

Use the following inputs and settings. Keep other settings at the page defaults.

Item Value
Input 2 cups flour
mode grams
Output In grams
Output 240 g flour
Output Measures: 1 cup = 236.6 ml
Output Weights from King Arthur Baking’s ingredient weight chart and USDA FoodData Central; a cup is never measured quite the same twice, so take them as a close guide.

Expected result — In grams

How it works

  1. Paste the ingredient list with its cups and spoons, one ingredient a line.
  2. Leave the cup size on automatic for US recipes, or choose a metric, UK, Japanese, Korean, Turkish or Brazilian cup.
  3. Every cup and spoon of a known ingredient is turned into grams; anything else is left as it was, with a note.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a cup of flour weigh less than a cup of sugar?
Because grams measure weight and cups measure volume: flour is light and airy (about 120 g a cup), sugar dense (198 g), honey heavier still (336 g). The converter uses each ingredient’s own figure.
Where do the weights come from?
From King Arthur Baking’s ingredient weight chart for baking staples and USDA FoodData Central for the rest. A cup is never filled quite the same twice, so take them as a close guide.
How big is a cup?
A US cup is 236.6 ml; a metric cup 250 ml; Japanese and Korean cups 200 ml; a Turkish su bardağı about 200 ml; a Brazilian xícara 240 ml. A tablespoon is 15 ml and a teaspoon 5 ml.
What if an ingredient is not known?
It is left in cups with a note. Liquids like water and milk convert almost one gram per millilitre.
Is anything uploaded?
No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
