Example
Example: “Meet at 7” in Morse, and “help me” decoded
Type Meet at 7 with the direction on Work it out from what I type: letters go in, so it encodes. Paste dots and dashes and it turns round by itself.
- Each letter becomes its code, with a space between letters: M is --, e is ., t is -.
- A slash marks the gap between words: Meet / at / 7, and 7 is --... in five symbols, as every digit is.
- Decoding works the same way backwards: .... . .-.. .--. / -- . reads help me.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
| SOS | ... --- ... |
| Meet at 7 | -- . . - / .- - / --... |
| Emma | . -- -- .- |
| .... . .-.. .--. / -- . | help me |
Meet at 7 is -- . . - / .- - / --..., 13 dots and dashes. Decoded text comes out in lower case, because Morse has no capitals.
How it works
- Type text to get Morse, or paste Morse to get text.
- Letters are separated by spaces and words by a slash, which is the usual written convention.
- Dots and dashes can be typed as . and -, or as · and –.
- Accented letters with no code of their own, such as ã or ê, are sent as the plain letter (é, ü and ñ keep their own codes); anything with no code at all, such as an emoji, is skipped, and the “no code for” count shows how many there were.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I write the gaps?
- A space between letters, a slash between words: “.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..”. That is the standard way of writing Morse down. Reading it, the translator also accepts a double space for a word break, which is the other common habit.
- What is SOS?
- ... --- ... — and it is not an abbreviation for anything. It was chosen in 1906 because it is unmistakable to hear and hard to garble, and the “save our ship” reading was invented afterwards.
- Does it do numbers and punctuation?
- Digits, full stop, comma, question mark, apostrophe, slash, brackets, colon, equals, plus and at. The @ sign is the newest addition to international Morse, added in 2004 so email addresses could be sent.
- What about other alphabets?
- International Morse covers the Latin alphabet. Japanese has its own code, Wabun, with entirely different patterns for kana — this page does not translate it, and pretending it could would produce confident nonsense.
- What are the numbers in Morse code?
- Five symbols each: 1 .----, 2 ..---, 3 ...--, 4 ....-, 5 ....., 6 -...., 7 --..., 8 ---.., 9 ----., 0 -----. The dots grow as the dashes shrink, so they are easy to learn as one pattern.
- How do I write my name in Morse code?
- Type it in: Emma is . -- -- .-, Anna is .- -. -. .-. Capitals and small letters give the same code.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It runs in your browser, so what you type stays on your computer.
