Example

Example: 27 children in a PE lesson — 4 teams, or teams of at most 6

A PE teacher pastes the class list of 27 names, one per line (names on one line with commas between them work too). Every press of Make teams shuffles the list again; the sizes of the teams follow from the numbers.

  1. Number of teams 4: the 27 are dealt out like cards, giving 7, 7, 7 and 6. Each line of the result starts with the team and its size, such as “Team 4 (6): Poppy, Evie, Max, Ava, Harry, Theo”.
  2. People per team 6 is a maximum: 27 ÷ 6 = 4.5, rounded up to 5 teams, which come out 6, 6, 5, 5 and 5 — not four teams of 6 and one of 3.
  3. Press again for a new draw. The shuffle uses the browser’s cryptographic random numbers, so every split is equally likely.
Split by Number Teams Sizes
Number of teams 2214 + 13
Number of teams 339 + 9 + 9
Number of teams 447 + 7 + 7 + 6
People per team 474 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 3
People per team 565 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 4
People per team 656 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 5

Even teams in one click, never more than one person apart. It is a fair random draw: it does not pick captains or keep particular children apart.

How it works

  1. Paste the names, one per line.
  2. Choose a number of teams, or a number of people per team.
  3. Press Make teams. Press again for a new split.

Frequently asked questions

What if the names do not divide evenly?
The teams differ by at most one person.
Is it fair?
Yes: the list is shuffled with the browser’s cryptographic random numbers, then dealt out like cards.
Can I paste from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Copy a column of names and paste it.
What does “People per team” do when the numbers don’t divide?
It treats the number as a maximum: the list is divided by it and rounded up to give the number of teams, and the people are spread evenly over them. 27 people at 6 per team give 5 teams of 6, 6, 5, 5 and 5.
Are duplicate names removed?
No. Every line is one person, so a name typed twice is counted twice. Blank lines are ignored.
Is the list sent anywhere?
No. The names are shuffled in your browser and stay on the page.
