Friday takeaway, with pizza twice as likely: weighting the wheel by repeating a line

A family of five can never agree on Friday’s takeaway, and the children want pizza to stand a better chance. The entries, one a line: Pizza, Pizza, Curry, Chinese, Fish and chips, Burgers — pizza typed twice.

  1. Every line is a slice of the same size, so the wheel has 6 slices and pizza has 2 of them.
  2. Press Spin. The winner is drawn first with the browser’s cryptographic random numbers; the wheel then turns five to seven times in about 4.6 seconds and stops inside that slice.
  3. With “Remove the winner before the next spin” on, only the slice that won comes off: after one pizza win, the other Pizza line is still on the wheel.
Entry Slices Chance each spin
Pizza 233.3 %
Curry 116.7 %
Chinese 116.7 %
Fish and chips 116.7 %
Burgers 116.7 %

Over the weeks pizza wins one Friday in three, each other dish one in six. The list stays on this device, so next Friday it is ready to spin again.

How it works

  1. Type the choices, one per line.
  2. Press Spin.
  3. To draw several in turn, turn on removing the winner.

Frequently asked questions

Is the wheel fair?
Yes. The winner is drawn first with the browser’s cryptographic random numbers, then the wheel is turned to stop on it. Every choice has the same chance.
Can I make one choice more likely?
Yes: type it on more lines. Every line is an equal slice, so an entry on two of six lines has twice the chance of each other one — 33.3 % against 16.7 %.
How long does a spin take?
About 4.6 seconds and five to seven full turns; if your device is set to reduce motion, it stops in well under a second. The result is drawn before the wheel starts turning, so the length of the spin changes nothing. At least two entries are needed.
How many choices can it hold?
Up to 100.
Is my list kept?
It is remembered on this device for next time, and never sent anywhere.
