Example

Example: a 15% tip on an 80.00 bill before tax

Enter a bill of 80.00, including 5.00 tax, choose a 15% tip and two people, and leave rounding off. All amounts use the same currency.

  1. The amount before tax is 80.00 − 5.00 = 75.00.
  2. The tip is 75.00 × 15% = 11.25.
  3. The total is 80.00 + 11.25 = 91.25.
Result Amount
Tip 11.25
Total 91.25
Displayed share per person 45.63

The total is 91.25. Each exact share is 45.625, displayed as 45.63; to settle exactly in cents, one person pays 45.62 and the other 45.63.

How it works

  1. Type the bill and choose the tip percentage.
  2. Add the number of people, and the tax on the bill if you want to tip on the amount before tax.
  3. Read the tip, the total and each share; round up the total or each share if you like.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?
In the United States 15–20 % is usual at a sit-down restaurant, 18–20 % for good service. In much of Europe a service charge is often included and people round up or leave 5–10 %; in Japan and Korea tipping isn’t expected.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Either is common; tipping on the amount before tax is the traditional way. Type the tax shown on the receipt and the tip is worked out on the bill without it, while the total still includes it.
What does rounding up do?
It makes the total — or each person’s share — a whole amount, adding a little to the tip. The result shows the tip percentage you actually leave.
How is the bill split?
The total including the tip is divided equally between the number of people you enter. For unequal shares, use the split-the-bill calculator.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. It is worked out in your browser.
