Example
Black Friday, a restaurant tip and a price rise, typed one per line
A shopper checks a few numbers before paying, typing each line the way they would say it. Dollar signs can be typed or left out; they are ignored. Every line gets its answer, with the saving shown next to each discount.
- A discount is “25% off 79.99” or “79.99 -35%”; a markup or tax is “price +8.25%”; a share is “18% of 64.50”.
- For a change, put an arrow between the old and the new number: 3.49 → 3.99 (or 3.49 -> 3.99). Turned around, 3.99 → 3.49 is a change of -12.53%.
- Two discounts on one line (25% + 10% off) are taken one after the other, as shops do: the second comes off the already lower price.
| You type | Answer shown | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 25% off 79.99 | 59.99 (you save 20.00) | A jacket at 25% off |
| 25% + 10% off 79.99 | 53.99 (you save 26.00) | An extra 10% at checkout: 32.5% off in all, not 35% |
| 79.99 -35% | 51.99 (you save 28.00) | A straight 35% off, for comparison |
| 18% of 64.50 | 11.61 | An 18% tip on a 64.50 bill |
| 64.50 +18% | 76.11 (11.61 more) | The bill with the tip |
| 1,250 +8.25% | 1,353.13 (103.13 more) | A 1,250 laptop with 8.25% sales tax |
| 3.49 → 3.99 | a change of +14.33% | A coffee that went up 50 cents |
| 42 / 56 | 75% | 42 marks out of 56 on a test |
The stacked coupon leaves the jacket at 53.99, two dollars more than a straight 35% off at 51.99. The tip is 11.61, so the bill comes to 76.11. Answers update as you type: change any number and its line changes.
How it works
- Type a calculation on each line: 20% off 3000, 3000 +10%, 20% of 3000.
- For a change between two numbers, put an arrow between them: 3000 → 2400.
- For what share one number is of another, divide: 600 / 3000.
Frequently asked questions
- What can I type?
- A discount (20% off 3000, 3000 -20%), a markup (3000 +10%), a share (20% of 3000), a change (3000 → 2400) or a ratio (600 / 3000). Currency signs are ignored.
- Is 20% off then 10% off the same as 30% off?
- No: it is 28% off, because the second discount is taken from the lower price. Type both on one line to see it: 20% + 10% off 100 → 72 (you save 28).
- How do I work out a tip or sales tax?
- Type the bill plus the rate: 64.50 +18% gives 76.11 (11.61 more), and 18% of 64.50 gives the tip alone, 11.61. Sales tax works the same way: 1,250 +8.25% → 1,353.13 (103.13 more).
- How do I calculate a percentage increase or decrease?
- Put an arrow between the old and the new value: 3.49 → 3.99 is a change of +14.33%, and a pay rise from 45,000 to 48,600 (45000 -> 48600) is +8%. A fall shows a minus: 3.99 → 3.49 is -12.53%.
- How do I find what percent one number is of another?
- Divide the part by the whole: 42 / 56 gives 75%, so 42 marks out of 56 is 75%.
- Is anything sent anywhere?
- No. It is worked out in your browser as you type.
