Example

Worked example — Numbers in kanji

Type the numbers, one per line. Commas and a yen sign are ignored. Use the following inputs and settings. Keep the other settings at the page defaults.

Item Value
Input 12345
Output 1 一万二千三百四十五

12345 is grouped as 1×10000 + 2×1000 + 3×100 + 4×10 + 5.

How it works

  1. Type the numbers, one per line. Commas and a yen sign are ignored.
  2. Choose how it is written: the way it is read, or digit by digit as an address or a serial number is.
  3. Turn on the formal forms for a contract, a receipt or a registration.
  4. Copy the result.

Frequently asked questions

What are the formal forms for?
To stop a figure being altered. 一 becomes 壱 and 二 becomes 弐 precisely because a pen stroke turns one into the other; 十 becomes 拾 for the same reason. They are required on some legal and financial documents and are usual on handwritten receipts.
Which characters does Japanese law actually require?
Only 壱, 弐, 参 and 拾 (and 萬 for 万). 四 and 五 keep their ordinary forms — unlike the fuller Chinese set, which also has 肆 and 伍. This follows the Japanese practice.
What is 金〇〇円也?
The way an amount is written on a receipt: 金 before it, 円也 after. The 也 closes the figure so nothing can be added to the end.
When would I want it digit by digit?
For an address written vertically, a telephone number, or a year on a formal document — 二〇二六年 rather than 二千二十六年.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. It is converted in your browser.
