Example

Example: $1,250.75 written out for a check, and four more amounts

Write as “An amount of money (as on a cheque)” with the page’s own currency, US dollars, and Letters “First letter capital”. Type the amounts one per line; commas between thousands are fine.

  1. The cents are counted, not read digit by digit: .75 is seventy-five cents.
  2. As a plain number, 1,250.75 is one thousand two hundred fifty point seven five.
  3. With pound sterling the same amount reads One thousand two hundred and fifty pounds and seventy-five pence, with the British “and”.
Typed Written out
1,250.75 One thousand two hundred fifty dollars and seventy-five cents
2,400 Two thousand four hundred dollars
19.99 Nineteen dollars and ninety-nine cents
100.05 One hundred dollars and five cents
0.50 Fifty cents

Copy the line onto the check. ALL CAPITALS gives ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS AND SEVENTY-FIVE CENTS for forms that ask for capitals.

How it works

  1. Type a number, or several, one per line. Commas between thousands are fine.
  2. For a cheque or a contract, choose an amount of money and the currency.
  3. Type a range such as 1-100 to have every number in it written out.
  4. Copy the words.

Frequently asked questions

How are decimals read?
Digit by digit after “point”, the way English says them: 3.14 is three point one four. As money, the cents are counted instead: 12.50 dollars is twelve dollars and fifty cents.
Why is there no “and” after the hundreds?
American usage writes one hundred twenty-five; British usage writes one hundred and twenty-five. Numbers follow the American way; choose pound sterling and the amount is written the British way, with the “and”.
How large a number can it write?
Up to 999,999,999,999 — nine hundred ninety-nine billion and so on. A range can list up to 1,000 numbers.
Can it write in other languages?
Yes, on this page in the other languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Turkish and Korean, each with its own rules — veintiuno, soixante et onze, einundzwanzig.
How do I write a year like 2026 in words?
As a number: two thousand twenty-six, the way a year is written on a check or in a contract. The spoken form “twenty twenty-six” is not produced.
What about negative numbers and numbers that are too large?
A minus sign is read as minus: -40 is minus forty. Anything above 999,999,999,999 comes back as “not a number”.
Is anything uploaded?
No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
