Example
Example: a week of timesheet lines, totalled in hours and decimal hours
Monday to Friday, one line a day with the start and end time and the lunch break; Friday is a half day. “Also show decimal hours” is ticked, as the page starts.
- A hyphen with no spaces makes a range, and “break 0:30” takes the break off that day.
- Decimal hours are what pay is worked out from: 7:45 is 7.75 hours, not 7.45.
- How far short of a 40-hour week? Type 40:00 - 34:45, with spaces: 5:15 (5.25 h).
| You type | Result |
|---|---|
| 8:45-17:15 break 0:30 | 8:00 (8 h) |
| 8:30-17:00 break 0:45 | 7:45 (7.75 h) |
| 9:00-17:30 break 0:30 | 8:00 (8 h) |
| 8:45-16:15 break 0:30 | 7:00 (7 h) |
| 9:00-13:00 | 4:00 (4 h) |
| Total | 34:45 (34.75 h) |
Total = 34:45 (34.75 h): 34 hours 45 minutes, or 34.75 hours to copy into a timesheet that wants decimals.
How it works
- Type one entry per line: a duration (1:30, 1h30m, 90m, 1.5h), a start and end time (9:00-17:30), or a sum (1:30 + 2:45 - 0:15).
- Add "break 1:00" after a start and end time to take the break off.
- Each line is worked out as you type, and the total of all lines appears at the end.
- Copy the result. Decimal hours (8.5 instead of 8:30) are shown for timesheets and pay calculations; switch them off if you do not need them.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I write a range and a subtraction?
- A hyphen with no spaces between two times is a range: 9:00-17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes. With spaces it subtracts: 2:45 - 0:15 is 2:30. "~" and "to" always mean a range.
- What about a night shift?
- A range whose end is earlier than its start runs past midnight: 22:00-6:00 is 8 hours.
- What are decimal hours?
- The same time as a number of hours: 8:30 is 8.5, 7:45 is 7.75. Pay and timesheet systems usually want this form, and it is shown next to each result.
- Can I type 9am to 5:30pm?
- Use 24-hour times: 9:00-17:30, or 9:00 to 17:30, gives 8:30 (8.5 h). “am” and “pm” are not read, and a line with them is marked as not a time.
- How do I add up hours and minutes?
- Put + between them on one line: 1:45 + 2:30 + 0:50 = 5:05 (5.08 h). Or type one time per line, and the total at the end adds them all up.
- Is anything sent anywhere?
- No. It is worked out in your browser as you type, and nothing you enter leaves your computer.
- Can it do seconds?
- Yes: write 1:02:03 or 45s, and every result is shown with seconds.
